The pedestrian bridge is part of Cadillac Fairview’s redevelopment of CF Toronto Eaton Centre. UK-based architects WilkinsonEyre won the international competition for the project with their exemplary design. Zeidler Partnership Architects, the architects of the original bridge, served as executive architects. The designers carefully considered the site context located on the dynamic downtown Queen Street between Yonge Street and Bay Street before coming up with the twisting motion of the connecting bridge.

The designers understood the metaphorical handshake between the two buildings the bridge connects—its geometry transitions from the circular arches found on the historic Hudson's Bay façade to the rectangular form of the Eaton Centre entrance. The twisting motion is further emphasized by 355 unique pieces of slumped glass and 200 etched bronze panels on the façade.

The architects and designers executed the assembly of the bridge with careful consideration to minimize disruption on Queen Street. The bridge was assembled on nearby James Street, and then hoisted into place by a self-propelled transporter. Finishes and connections were completed onsite.

The goals are to place priority on the pedestrian experience and to emphasize the quality of design in the public realm.
