Design Excellence & Plachta Award
Chair: Larry Richards, FRAIC, Professor & Former Dean, University of Toronto
Larry Wayne Richards is Professor of Architecture at the University of Toronto where he served as Dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design from 1997 to 2004. Earlier he taught for 15 years in the Waterloo School of Architecture and was Director there from 1982 to 1987.
Richards received a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University and was a designer with The Architects Collaborative (TAC), working on major institutional projects with Norman Fletcher, Walter Gropius, and in association with Pietro Belluschi. During his 40-year academic and professional career, Richards has published more than 60 articles and authored or edited five books, including Toronto Places: A Context for Urban Design (with Marc Baraness), CCA: Building and Gardens, and University of Toronto: A Campus Guide. Many of Richards’ own projects and drawings are in the permanent collection of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal. He is a Fellow in the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Institute for Urban Design (New York) and an International Associate in the American Institute of Architects. In 2007 he received the national Advocate for Architecture Award from the RAIC.
Gordon Dorrett, Landscape Architect & President, Forrec Ltd.
Gordon Dorrett is a Landscape Architect and president of Forrec ltd., a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary design firm that serves a global market. Mr. Dorrett's twenty-five years of experience in master planning, mixed-use developments and themed environments has made him a leader in the field and a frequent speaker on these topics. Forrec's projects in Canada include: work for Toronto Zoo, Royal Ontario Museum, Rogers Centre, Calgary Olympic Development, Canada's Wonderland, and West Edmonton Mall. Other projects can be found on six continents and include: the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum; Universal Studios, Florida, Singapore and Dubai; and Legoland, Germany.
Glen Murray, President and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Urban Institute
Glen Murray is the president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Urban Institute. As the former Mayor of Winnipeg for six years, his vision for urban centres is anchored in practical and very successful experience on the council floor, working with business and union leaders, and collaborating with other levels of government. His vision for a new deal for cities started with the formation of the C5 - a coalition of mayors from five Canadian cities. It was during that time that he became the chair of the Big City Mayors Caucus in 2002. He was appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada to the chair of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE), where his extensive experience in municipal government is helping to shape environmental policy and respond to climate change in Canada
Glen is a member of the Premier of Ontario’s Climate Change Taskforce and serves as a member of the Government of Ontario’s Blue Ribbon Panel on the Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan. Mr. Murray is also an honorary member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and holds the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.
Matthew Searle, Director of Marketing, IIDEX NeoCon Canada
A 25-year design industry professional, Matthew currently leads the marketing team at IIDEX/NeoCon Canada. By far the most successful design exposition and conference in Canada, Matthew and his team have created a show that receives major national and international attention from attendees, manufacturers, and both trade and consumer media for its innovative keynote speaker line-up, networking opportunities, its visionary exhibits and with over 100 CEU accredited seminars, has developed a unique platform for professional learning. Before joining IIDEX/ NeoCon Canada, he worked with numerous international furniture and lighting companies in sales and marketing, with a particular focus on the architectural and design communities’ right across Canada. He holds a university degree in Urban Studies and is officially bilingual. He resides in Toronto.
Esther E. Shipman, Curator, Architecture & Design, Design at Riverside
Esther E. Shipman is the Curator of Architecture & Design for Cambridge Galleries in Cambridge, Ontario, where she served as the Assistant Commissioner for Canada to the 11th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice in 2008. She was Founder and Executive Director of VIRTU/Directions in Canadian Design (1985), a highly acclaimed design advocacy organization, pivotal in the development and promotion of new design both in Canada and internationally, and has lectured extensively on VIRTU and Canadian Design across Canada and abroad. Ms. Shipman is also a well established and published writer and consultant on design and cultural issues, and has acted for a wide range of clients including the Government of Canada (Department of Canadian Heritage), and leading design manufacturers, retailers and magazines. Her work as a curator, promoter and cultural event/program manager in Canadian design spans over three decades.

Chair: Ivan Martinovic, OAA, AAA, MRAIC, AIA/IA Principal, Archdesign Architects & Former Owner, Urbanscape Gallery
Ivan Martinovic is a principal of Archdesign Architects, a Toronto-based architectural practice providing a wide range of architectural, planning, design and project management services. Ivan is an architect with over twenty five years of professional experience. He is a graduate of the University of Belgrade, former Yugoslavia, with a combined architectural and engineering degree. He has extensive experience in a variety of building projects and types throughout Canada and former Yugoslavia. His broad scope of experience includes all aspects of architectural work, as well as urban planning and development, graphic and industrial design. Ivan is registered to practice in provinces of Ontario and Alberta.
Ivan expresses his interest in various educational and professional issues through volunteer work in numerous professional and community organizations, including several OAA Committees, NCARB and CACB. He currently serves as a Treasurer of the Canadian Architectural Certification Board. As an educator, he teaches courses for a diverse student population in Ryerson's architectural program, and in OCAD's environmental and industrial design programs, including a course on Architectural Presentation.
Barbara Astman, Camera Artist, Professor, Ontario College of Art and Design
Barbara Astman has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both in Canada and internationally since the early 1970s. She has work in public collections in Canada the United States and Europe. Astman has an Associates Degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen and holds an AOCA from the Ontario College of Art. Active in the Toronto arts community, Astman has sat on numerous boards and advisory committees. Currently, she is a member of the Board of Trustee’s at the Art Gallery of Ontario and a Professor in the Faculty of Art at the Ontario College of Art & Design.
In 1995 a retrospective titled: Barbara Astman: Personal/Persona A 20 Year Survey Exhibitionopened at the Art Gallery of Hamilton; this exhibition toured the following year to numerous Canadian museums. She is represented by the Corkin Gallery, Toronto. Most recently she completed a public art project in Toronto, the Murano on Bay, comprised of 217 art windows. Astman has been engaged with a curatorial project for the Art Gallery of Ontario dealing with Joyce Weiland and early feminist practice. Astman’s work is included in the exhibition titled: Beautiful Fiction, currently on at the AGO. Her most recent solo exhibition, Wonderland, opened at the Corkin Gallery in the fall of 2009. Always looking for a new challenge, he inspires loyalty, passion and innovation in his staff which is evident in every aspect of the company. Out of this creative environment Gareth and his team takes risks, utilizing new materials and technologies, providing creative custom solutions for top arrchitects and designers worlwide. Gareth was awarded the 2009 Canadian CEO of the Year for the best design strategy at the annual Design Exchange Awards.
Doug Panton, Illustrator/Designer & Creative Director at Daigneault & Panton Inc. (DPI)
Doug Panton is an Illustrator/Designer and Creative Director at Daigneault & Panton Inc. DPI has worked on a variety of creative projects in the advertising, publishing and corporate/interactive industries where they have won over 140 international awards for their work. Doug is also an Associate Professor and Chair of First Year Faculty of Design at the Ontario College of Art & Design.

Landmark, da Vinci Award, G. Randy Roberts, Honour Roll & Best Emerging Practice Award
Chair: Yves Gosselin PP/FRAIC, Hon.AIA, Hon.RAIA, MCIP Project Executive, Public Works and Government Services Canada
Yves Gosselin is an executive with the Federal Government with more than 30 years experience in urban design, architecture and engineeering. He is a past president and a Fellow of the RAIC, and an adjunct professor of architecture and urbanism at Carleton University.
Gerrie Doyle, B.Sc.(Arch), Dipl.Arch.,OAA, OAA President & Principal, aipm architects inc.
Gerrie Doyle is entering her second term as President of the OAA. She is also a principal of aipm architects inc. Toronto, Ontario. Aipm architects inc. is a dynamic full-service architectural firm providing architecture, interiors and project management services to both local and international clients. The principals are industry leaders, who regularly direct high-profile projects in the aviation sector, hotel industry, and corporate commercial complexes. Gerrie is a graduate of the Institute of Technology in Dublin, Ireland and Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. She has 25 years experience as an architect, specifically as a project manager. Prior to joining aipm, Gerrie worked for numerous firms in Toronto before opening her own practice in Ottawa.
Diana Osborne, B.Arch.,OAA Architect, Osborne Architect
Greg Redden M.Arch, LEED-AP, RAIC, OAA Partner, Macdonald Zuberec Ensslen Architects Inc.
Born, raised and educated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Greg received his Master of Architecture degree, from Dalhousie University ). Prior to moving to the Niagara Region in 2002, he has lived and worked for architectural firms in Bermuda and Annapolis, Maryland.
Greg has spent the last eight years enjoying his work and life in Niagara and is now a partner at Macdonald Zuberec Ensslen Architects Inc., (MZE) St. Catharines. He received his license to practice architecture from the Ontario Association of Architects in 2003 and achieved recognition as a Leader in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional from the Canada Green Building Council in 2005. As Chair of the Niagara Society of Architects, he, and other Society members, have been working with the Bi-National Tourism Alliance in developing an expanded Doors Open Niagara event.
As a small firm in Niagara, MZE was fortunate to have the opportunity to the be selected by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority to design their Centre for Conservation at Ball’s Falls Conservation Area. It is targeted to be a LEEDŽ Gold certified building and was selected as one of the recipients of the Sustainable Architecture Magazine’s Green Architecture Award. Last year MZE celebrated it’s 50th anniversary.
