May 5 - 7, 2010

BACKGROUND on 2010 course below:
Deadline: January 25, 2010
- Admission Course Notice (PDF file, 1 pg, 32 KB)
- 2010 Application Form (PDF file, 1 pg, 23 KB)

Purpose
  • The OAA Admission Course is one of the requirements for licensure in Ontario.
  • The Admission Course covers topics related to regulatory, legal and practice issues specific to Ontario that are not covered in the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) or the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).
  • The Admission Course is designed to supplement the applicant's formal professional education and practical experience gained during the period of internship. The Admission Course and the Canadian Experience Record Book are complementary; however, the Admission Course may be completed prior to the recording of experience hours.
Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for registration in the Admission Course an applicant must:
  • Hold Intern Architect status with the OAA with all current fees paid in full.
  • Complete the Admission Course Application Form.
  • Pay the Admission Course registration fee.
Registration Deadline
  • The Registration Deadline of January 25, 2010 will be strictly enforced. The OAA requires a substantial lead-time to order and prepare study material for the Course. Study material is sent out well in advance of the lectures and Interns are expected to be familiar with the documents in advance of the Course.
  • Following the Registration Deadline for Interns, a limited number of seats will be made available to OAA Members for continuing education purposes.
Cancellation Policy

In the event of cancellation of registration in the Admission Course, there will be no refund of the fee after the refund date of
February 25, 2010 specified on the application form.

Content of the Admission Course

The Admission Course lectures cover a range of subjects and focus on practice-related matters, as well as the legal and legislative context within which architects practice in Ontario.

It is assumed that most technical, creative and management subjects considered basic knowledge to architectural practice will have been adequately covered as part of the Intern's certified academic requirements.

Interns are encouraged to become familiar with information relating to the course through observation or directly participating in practice situations within their work environment.

The content of the Lectures for 2010 include the following:
  • The Architects Act, Architecture in Ontario and the OAA
  • Legal Aspects and Contracts
  • The Ontario Building Code
  • Bid Theory and Practice
  • Construction Lien Act
  • Contract Administration and General Review.
Course Study Material

Course material and a list of recommended reading material will be provided to registrants approximately six weeks prior to the Admission Course.

Interns are required to prepare for the Admission Course by thoroughly reviewing the following course and practice-related material:
  • Architects Act, Regulations and By-laws
  • Canadian Standard Form Agreements
  • OAA Regulatory Notices and Practice Tips
  • CCDC Standard Construction Contracts and Documents
  • The Canadian Handbook of Practice (CHOP)
