Architect Registration Examination (A.R.E.)

Successful completion of the A.R.E. is one of the requirements for licensure in Ontario. The A.R.E. comprises nine divisions covering various critical aspects of architectural theory and practice, as follows:
  • Pre-design
  • Site Planning
  • Building Planning
  • Building Technology
  • General Structures
  • Lateral Forces
  • Mechanical & Electrical Systems
  • Materials & Methods
  • Construction Documents & Services
Examination Registration Requirements and Administration
  • Interns should contact Jessica O'Rafferty at: jessicao@oaa.on.ca when they wish to commence taking the examinations.
  • The provincial association staff will prepare an Eligibility Form on your behalf and forward the form to the Chauncey Group.
  • The Chauncey Group are U.S. based Test Consultants who administer the A.R.E.
Location and Time of Examinations
  • All examinations are taken at Prometric Test Centres.
There are over 200 test centres across the U.S. and Canada. Ontario centres are located in Cambridge, Toronto, London, Ottawa, Whitby and Windsor.
  • Most test centres are open six days a week, 50 weeks a year. Interns may take the A.R.E. at any test centre in any jurisdiction regardless of where they become eligible.
  • All divisions of the A.R.E. are offered year-round.
Summary of Examination Application Procedures
  • The Chauncey Group staff will enter the data from the Eligibility Form into its database and send eligibility information to the Prometric Test Centre Network. This will allow Prometric to confirm your eligibility when you call to schedule an appointment to test.
  • The Chauncey Group will send to you an Authorization to Test indicating the divisions for which you are eligible. They will also send the A.R.E. Guidelines that describe the examination content, timing for each division, the fees, how to pay for the exam, how to get the practice software and where you may take the exam.
  • After receiving the Guidelines, you decide when and where you want to take the exam(s). The examinations do not have to be taken all at once.
Taking the Examination
  • Schedule an appointment for each division you wish to take.
  • Take the exam as scheduled. Results will be sent via electronic means to the Chauncey Group. The Chauncey Group will process the results.
  • The Chauncey Group will send your score results to the authorizing provincial association for transmittal to you. The process takes approximately three to four weeks for multiple choice divisions, and two months for the graphics divisions.
Grading
  • Information with respect to passing standards will be provided to Interns registered in the Course in the A.R.E. Guidelines which will be mailed to them from the U.S. Test Consultants, together with their authorization to test.
Examination Failures
  • If a particular division is failed, you cannot retake that division for a six-month period. The Chauncey Group will automatically send a letter to you after the six months have elapsed advising that you may schedule an appointment.
  • Failed examinations are automatically reviewed to ensure that a failure did, in fact, occur. As examination marks are reviewed exhaustively prior to the release of results, there is no appeal in the event of failure.
  • Intern Architects may repeat a failed examination until they pass it. Only the division failed must be repeated.
