Architectural Design Competitions solicit design solutions which are judged impartially on the comparative excellence, imagination and ingenuity of the submissions. The winner of an architectural competition is awarded the commission for the project. The architects for many public buildings such as City Halls, Museums and Galleries are selected by this method. There are two types of architectural competitions, "open" and "limited".
Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's Competition Documents
OAA Council has endorsed the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's Competition Documents as a guide to conducting architectural competitions in Ontario. In accordance with Regulation 27 under the Architects Act, an Open Competition for a building project within Ontario must be approved by the Council of the Ontario Association of Architects in order for Ontario architects to participate. OAA Council will utilize the RAIC's Competition Documents as a guide in approving an 'Open' Competition. It should be noted however that the term 'Open Competition' as defined in Regulation 27 is referred to as 'Limited Competition' within the RAIC's Documents. This difference is noted in the body of the RAIC Document. A 'Limited Competition' as defined in Regulation 27 is referred to as Invited Competition in the RAIC's Documents.
