OAA Continuing Education Program Background

OAA Council approved the Continuing Education (ConEd) Program Framework in November 1998 and the program was officially launched January 1, 1999. The OAA ConEd Program operates on a two-year Cycle. The reporting period runs from January 1 to December 31 biennially.

Reporting Period for current Cycle 2010/11 is January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011.

Originally the ConEd program was comprised of two components: Professional Renewal learning and Self-Directed learning. Later, the term “Professional Renewal” was changed to “OAA-Directed” to better reflect the discrepancy between the mandatory courses developed by the OAA and the courses offered by other organizations and chosen independently by architects.

In 2005 the Provincial and Territorial Associations of Architects and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada adopted a series of principles regarding Continuing Education. As a result starting from January 1, 2008 the OAA Continuing Education Program has undergone changes to better align itself with other Continuing Education programs across the country. Currently, the program includes two levels of continuing education activities:

CORE Learning
Self-Directed Learning

Participant Role and Opportunities:
  • Choose the specific areas of interest that will help you achieve your professional development goals;
  • Check under CORE and Self-Directed Opportunities links and review e-bulletin for upcoming opportunities;
  • Participate in valuable, interesting opportunities;
  • Track your participation in events and opportunities throughout the cycle.
  • Keep a list of the continuing education activities as you complete them. Include: Date/Provider/Activity/Hours, then self-report your CORE and Self-Directed activities under "Reporting Hours - Transcripts" on the Web site.
  • Council will review CORE opportunities biennially to identify emerging needs. Suggestions for CORE learning can be forwarded to Ellen Savitsky, Continuing Education Coordinator at ellens@oaa.on.ca for Council consideration.
