Architecture Education Resource Guide
The Architecture Education Resource Guide is a manual for Ontario teachers to help integrate the elements of architecture into their lesson plans. The object of this guide is not to make every student an architect, but to infuse the process of design throughout the curriculum. The guide consists of various resources and suggested learning activities to help children understand the built environment in their community.
How to use to this guide
This guide is intended for teachers in the Ontario education system to use as a resource guide to incorporate architecture into lesson plans. The guide has been divided into four categories:
Each category consists of a selection of subjects where architecture can be easily integrated to assist the child in achieving the objectives set out for that learning level. Each category also includes a suggested learning activity. A list of resources containing several web sites about architecture books, lesson plans, activities, games and historical architecture is provided to help you fit architecture into your current lesson plans.
Teachers can be creative when introducing architecture to their students. Use the environment as examples, like the school or the community. Take a walk outside and observe the surroundings.
What is Architecture?
Architecture is the art, the science and the business of building.
Architecture is all around us and is a large part of our culture and heritage as Canadians.
What is an Architect?
Architects are professionally trained designers who work on a variety of different buildings for a variety of different purposes. They play a valuable role in the built environment, working closely with clients, builders, and government bodies taking into consideration their needs and requirements.
Ontario Education Curriculum
The study of architecture can be integrated in many aspects of the Ontario education curriculum. The basics of architecture help to develop many important learning skills such as creativity, problem solving and critical thinking. Architecture can be easily integrated into subjects such as the arts, mathematics, sciences, social studies and history, humanities and technological education.
Architecture Week
Architecture Week is an annual event hosted by the Regional Architectural Societies. The event is designed to raise awareness of the profession across the province. Architecture Week is held in different communities in the spring & fall and are often aligned with Doors Open Ontario events. This would be the perfect opportunity to introduce architecture to your students.
