Membership & Practice

Membership in the Ontario Association of Architects includes 2,500 licensed architects, 1,200 intern architects, and 750 associates (honorary, life, retired, and student associates). There are 1,325 architectural practices in Ontario.

Only individuals licensed by the OAA may legally use the title “Architect”.

In Ontario, the Architects Act and the Ontario Building Code set out the types and sizes of buildings which must be designed by an architect. All architects offering or providing services to the public must have a “Certificate of Practice” issued by the OAA and carry professional liability insurance.

Ontario architects are highly trained professionals bound by regulations made under the Architects Act, a public statute. To be licensed as an architect, an individual must gain a minimum of three years practical experience, pass extensive examinations, and attend the OAA Admission Course. Following licensure all architects must participate in the OAA Professional Excellence Program.

The Ontario Association for Applied Architectural Sciences (OAAAS) delivers a new building design professionals program that recognizes three categories of building designers: Associate OAAAS, Technologist OAAAS, and a technologist licensed by the OAA. The program became effective April 23, 2003. The program ensures that standards and qualifications for these individuals are maintained, taking a path that continues to protect the public interest.  The OAAAS is an association governed by a Board of Directors comprised of representatives from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and the Ontario Association of Architects.
