Biography

Career Path:

I have over 35 years of experience in the architecture profession across 3 continents.  I started my career in Karachi-Pakistan with the office of ‘Arshad Shahid Abdulla’, a leading architectural firm in my country of origin. After obtaining my architectural licence, I started my own architectural practice in 1986, doing Single Family Residences, Commercial Interiors, Church Buildings and Community Schools.

Upon coming to Canada at the time of recession and low employment in the profession; I found an opportunity to work on Building Condition Assessments, Building Envelope retrofits and Construction Detailing in an engineering environment for 17 months. Thereafter from 1997 onward, I started working in architectural firms; Mesbur + Smith Architects, Moffat Kinoshita Architects (now Canon Design), NORR Architects and Engineers, WZMH Architects and with the City of Toronto’s Asset Preservation department. I have been fortunate to work on notable projects such as Foster + Partner’s Leslie Dan Pharmacy Building for the University of Toronto, the early stages of the Ismaili Centre-Toronto, St Joseph’s Healthcare expansion in Hamilton and Brookfield’s Bay-Adelaide Centre.  I have also worked on Hospitality and Mixed-use developments in the UAE at WS Atkins and Partners.

I have a small architectural practice in Toronto, alongside which, I contribute time to volunteerism.

Service to the Profession:

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, I was actively involved with the Institute of Architects in Karachi-Pakistan as elected member of the Executive Committee and later as Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary. Having a keen interest in promoting architectural education in an environment where architecture was predominantly practiced by non-architects, I joined the adjunct faculty of a newly formed Art and architecture school in 1989 for which I was instrumental in preparing the B. Arch curriculum; and taught foundation years and design studios till I moved to Canada in 1995.

At the OAA, I have participated as member of the Experience Requirements Committee from 2011-2016. I mentor OAA- IAP Interns and volunteer as invigilator for the ExAC examinations. Through the TRIEC Mentoring Partnership and through the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s Foreign Trained Professional Co-op program, I assist foreign trained architecture professionals with job search, mentor them in understanding the Canadian practice and create awareness and value of the OAA-IAP program.
