Council Highlights - May 24, 2017 Meeting

The spring 2017 meeting of OAA Council was held on May 24 in conjunction with the OAA/RAIC Festival of Architecture at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario. The following agenda items of particular note were dealt with:

Recognition of Traditional Lands

At the outset of the meeting President John Stephenson took a moment to recite the following acknowledgement of the traditional lands upon which the meeting was being held.

“I want to begin by recognizing that the land on which this event is occurring is the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin peoples and we are grateful that we can meet here to celebrate architecture.”
OAA Headquarters Renew & Refresh

OAA Architect David Fujiwara presented the proposed interior layout for the renovated OAA Headquarters to Council, along with furniture options, material selections and colour palates.

Following the presentation and discussion, Council approved the interior design which reflects a more collaborative and open concept as well as having a considerable amount of additional meeting space.

A pre-tender estimate is anticipated for Council approval in the next two months.  OAA staff will vacate the building over the Labour Day weekend to make way for the year-long construction.  Tender award is anticipated in mid-September with construction to begin shortly thereafter. Council was advised of Pro-Demnity Insurance Company’s decision to leave the building permanently and seek alternate office space. A more detailed update on the building renovation and refresh was e-mailed to members earlier this week.

Establishment of Legal Reserve Fund

The Senior Vice President and Treasurer presented a proposal to establish a legal reserve fund. As the regulatory and enforcement body for architecture in Ontario, Council agreed that it is good governance to have a legal reserve given that it is very difficult to predict legal fees in any given year.
