OAA HEADQUARTERS GETS STELLAR SEND-OFF

CONSTRUCTION PHASE ABOUT TO BEGIN

The OAA HQ gets plenty of attention on a warm September night -- laser lights and crowds roused curiosity

September 15, 2017 Toronto -- It was an unusual sight – laser lights, music and crowds that spilled out onto the podium level of 111 Moatfield Drive. The weather was one more welcomed element: barbeque on the deck space, installations outside, and exterior spaces eventually filling with individuals looking to enjoy the ‘late summer’ evening.

The OAA Interns Committee saw an opportunity—an empty 21,000+ sq. ft. of space became available once the building was vacated. The offices were relocated to 1 Duncan Mill Road on September 5. The OAA staff are working one kilometer west for the duration of the OAA HQ Renew + Refresh project to create a zero-net energy building. The building is on schedule to reopen in late 2018.

The //MOVE Party, big installation and dance party, took place Friday, September 15, 2017. The building was animated with nearly 500 people attending the event. Twenty-eight art installations by OAA intern architects, architects and artists created an intriguing sensory tour throughout the two-storey structure.

While the concepts were captivating for the attendees, for OAA staff the installations took on additional meaning; many of the concepts had a correlation to the interests and/or personality of the previous tenant of the individual offices. It created a buzz among those who had ‘insider information’ and laughter and surprise wafted amongst the constructed elements of the artists’ works. Collaboration and meaning were layered throughout the experience.

The OAA would like to thank all of those involved, the Interns Committee, the coordinating team, and the sponsors including the established members of profession who stepped up to support our younger members. Most importantly, a special thanks to the attendees whose energy and interaction fulfilled the building’s desire: to be a hub of creativity and collaboration for architects and the public.

The OAA was proud to be the presentation sponsor of the event. Again, congratulations to all who ‘got the party started’.
