
ELKEN, Ants - OAA Life Member, RCA, FRAIC, Professor Emeritus in Architecture, University of Toronto Born in Tartu, Estonia on March 25, 1917. Died in Toronto, Canada on June 8, 2011. War forced Ants to flee his beloved Estonia and he lived in three countries before settling in Canada. Music and tennis were lifelong passions; his violin being one of the few objects saved when he fled Estonia. He had a successful career in architecture, as practitioner and teacher, and following retirement he went back to school and graduated, at age 75, from the Ontario College of Art and Design in ceramics. Predeceased by his wife Margaret and brother Juri, he leaves life companion Joyce, children Peter and Tiina, grandsons Harry, Kyle and Rylee and many friends and family in Canada, the United States and Estonia. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 12 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at MURRAY NEWBIGGING FUNERAL HOME, 733 MT. PLEASANT ROAD. A Remembrance Service will be held at St. Peter's Estonian Lutheran Church, 817 Mt. Pleasant Road on Monday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m. In Ants' memory donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the National Estonian Foundation of Canada.
