CLIFFORD, Michael , Architect 83, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in the early hours, ''at home'' in the Manulife Centre, the building he designed and one of his many architectural contributions to Toronto. He left us as he lived, surrounded by love, with Karin, his wife of 57 years, and children Paul, Neil, Ann and Ian at his bedside. He so enjoyed people, and embraced many interests with riveting attention: from sailing to farming; design to ''reading Shakespeare''; throwing ceramic pots on his wheel and eternally fixing his farm equipment. He was an enthusiastic lover of music and would have given his ''eye-teeth'' to have learned to play the piano. A proud certified organic farmer, he tended his fields outside Creemore in the Purple Hills since the early '60's. He became an advocate for the preservation of the Niagara escarpment's natural beauty and habitat. His passion for the farm spread to all his children, grandchildren and their many friends. Joining Mike on the tractors was a special treat. The loving, helping hands of family and friends served him and Karin well later in their life together. Major farm projects such as the additions to the farmhouse became a shared joint effort for all the generations. The farm became their permanent address for the last 15 years, and the area benefitted from his architectural skills. His latest projects included the Station-on-the-Green (Creemore's centennial project), the Mad and Noisy gallery, private homes, and his final project, an addition to the Teddy Bears' Daycare centre. Though the recipient of much recognition over his long career, none pleased him more than the children of the daycare centre celebrating his 80th birthday in gratitude for his work. Days before the sudden diagnosis of cancer, Mike worked determinedly to finish the concept drawings for the addition to the Creemore Medical Centre. In his last month, visits by his grandchildren filled him with overwhelming joy. They were in his loving gaze to the end. His rapt attention and devoted love will be missed by his friends and especially his family: Karin, Paul (wife Molly; grandchildren Disa, Julian, Timothy), Neil (grandsons Evan and Phoenix), Ann (grandson Kyle), Ian (partner Gabrielle; grandchildren Ziva and Tai'o), and in the UK, niece Maya, nephew Michael, second cousins Pat and Fiona and their families. There will be a celebration of Mike's life on Sunday, April 24 in Creemore's Station-on-the-Green. Donations are welcome to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.
