OAA E-bulletin Announcement - January 4 - 17, 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of architect, Roderick Robbie.
Roderick Robbie is an architect known for his innovation. He is best known for his design of the Canada Pavilion at Expo '67 and Toronto's SkyDome (Rogers Centre). SkyDome was the first stadium in the world to feature an 11 000-ton steel retractable roof. He has since been the lead architect on similar projects around the world.
Robbie was chairman emeritus of Robbie Young + Wright/IBI Group Architects and an Officer of the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada recognizes people who have made a difference to the country. It is the country's highest honour for lifetime achievement.
The Order of Canada’s Website captures his contribution to the profession:
“His designs have helped to establish the precast building industry in this country and, in the 1960s, he helped lead a project that resulted in a dramatic new approach to constructing schools. Recognized internationally, he continues to enhance Canada's reputation in architecture.”
He became ill in November 2011 and passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2012. Predeceased by his wife Enid, an artist and historian, he is survived by his four children.
His contribution to the profession has been significant and he will be greatly missed.
