This technical presentation will review the new OBC provisions which permit 5 and 6 storey wood construction. The background to these new Code provisions will be presented to understand the objectives of this significant Code change. Key Code provisions will be reviewed and analysed to understand the options, limitations, and conditions associated with these new provisions. Key design details will reviewed to understand the complexity of the design and to understand the design solutions that can address these requirements.
Glen Somerton is a Senior Code Specialist with the Code and Life Safety Group at Morrison Hershfield.
Glenn has extensive experience in application of Codes and standards for new construction and renovations. Prior to his current position, he had a 30 year career with the City of Ottawa, including the past 14 years as the Program Manager responsible for the delivery of plan examination services and permit issuance for the Large Building section. He provides expert advice on the application of building and fire codes and fire and life safety standards in association with design and construction of new buildings and renovations to existing buildings. He works closely with design teams and local Building and Fire Officials to establish an appropriate level of safety and interpret and apply Codes for construction and renovation projects.
Session runs from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
