The OAAAS establishes the education, experience and examination requirements for three categories of building designers: Associate OAAAS, Technologist OAAAS and Licensed Technologist OAA. The OAA Council has established the scope of practice and the terms of the limited licence.
A Licensed Technologist OAA has a greater scope to provide architectural services to clients, whether working in a large or small architectural firm, or working on your own. The OAA regulatory authority ensures that the public interest is protected when a Lic.Tech.OAA provides architectural services directly to the public, such as designing:
Review the Policy Statement of the OAA Council to understand the rights and responsibilities of the Licensed Technologist OAA. Information about how the OAAAS operates is found under the OAAAS Board of Directors.

Becoming a Licensed Technologist OAA requires candidates to document and submit work experience hours to the OAAAS.
All OAAAS members (except those who are Licensed Technologists OAA) must complete and submit work experience record books for each 1,000 worked, as well as when changing employers. Each report must be signed and initialed by the supervising architect and sent to OAAAS, no later than eight weeks following the end of the reporting period. If you don’t file your work experience record book on time, a late submission charge will apply.
The only exception to this rule is for new members. Individuals who join OAAAS are permitted to file retroactive hours, providing the work is certified by an architect and is submitted within three months of joining. Some new members can document significant prior experience and thus move well along the path. This special rule applies in the following circumstances:

Members who hold the designation Technologist OAAAS or Licensed Technologist OAA must commit to lifelong learning. Each member must meet continuing education requirements established by the OAA Continuing Education Program as follows for the two-year cycle that began on January 1, 2010.
Self-directed learning includes courses or private study “related to” the profession. The OAA CORE Learning Program comprises courses offered by one of the architects’ associations, or courses offered by Ontario universities.
Continuing Education requirements may change if your membership category changes during the two-year cycle. If your category changes within the first six months of the cycle, you will be required to accumulate all of the relevant CORE and Self-directed learning hours. If your category changes in the subsequent 12-month period, you will need to record one-half of the normal hours for that cycle. If your category changes in the last six months of the cycle, your requirement is based on your previous category as follows:
The Licensed Technologist OAA is responsible for one-half the number of hours of an architect in the province. This is important because there are maximum numbers of hours that can be claimed for various activities. The following links provide further details:
Self-Directed Activities Allocation
Individuals certified as a Licensed Technologist OAA may carry forward a maximum of seven self-directed hours and four hours of CORE learning. The carry-forward policy does not apply to those designated as a Technologist OAAAS.
