The “Why” of Anodizing Finish for Architectural Aluminum

Why Anodizing is Essential for Architects:

Anodizing is one of the main surface finishing options for architectural aluminum, offering significant benefits that extend beyond aesthetics. It is not only a protective finish, safeguarding aluminum from corrosion, but also provides a vibrant, durable aesthetic that enhances the visual appeal of a wide range of architectural applications.

As a conversion coating, anodizing eliminates the risks associated with film adhesion that are common in other finishes. This makes it a reliable and long-lasting choice for building facades, window frames, and other exterior elements. For architects, understanding anodizing is crucial because it ensures the aluminum surfaces in their designs stand up to harsh weather conditions, maintain their visual integrity over time, and contribute to the overall sustainability of the building. This means architects can create beautiful, high-performance structures without worrying about uneven coloring or finish degradation.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, architects will:

  • Gain a clear understanding of when to specify Class 1 versus Class 2 anodized finishes.
  • Learn when and why to use conventional anodized finishes versus two-stage anodizing.
  • Review the production process of anodized finishes and how they are applied to aluminum profiles, sheets, and brake shapes.
  • Understand the key benefits of anodizing, including the ability to coat profiles with thermal breaks and largely avoid Faraday effects, which is crucial for complex geometries.
  • Learn how to minimize the risk of color variation in anodizing finished parts, leading to consistent quality and design integrity.
  • Gain insights into how anodized finishes enhance the durability and sustainability of architectural aluminum, contributing to long-lasting and low-maintenance building materials.

List of Presenters:

Marco Cardoso – General Manager | Dependable Anodizing
