A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Jennifer Anderson (Architect).
I went to Matera, Italy this spring and did some sketching of the Sassi. Matera's Sassi represent a remarkable example of vernacular architecture, where dwellings were carved into the tufo limestone hillside and layered over centuries to create a distinctive urban landscape.
One sketch focuses on the layered dwellings rising from the hillside, while the second captures the narrow streets, stairways, and passages that weave through the Sassi, revealing the interconnected urban fabric that contributes to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
