During this year’s OAA Virtual Conference in May, the online sessions offered were well-received and provided insights into a variety of topics. The OAA would like to remind members that the 2021 OAA Virtual Sessions are now available on YouTube. This includes the core Continuing Education learning offered at Conference as well as the Sponsored Sessions and Virtual Tours. All available sessions are on the OAA YouTube channel organized in the OAA Virtual Conference Week 2021 playlist. We encourage you to explore these sessions as a suite of on-demand offerings. These sessions are considered unstructured hours when viewed in this format.

At this time, we’d like to spotlight a session offered by one of our generous Conference sponsors. To view the full session, please click here.

If you’re seeking innovative products at the intersection of technology and concrete, look no further than Carboclave.

Carboclave is next-generation technology used in manufacturing cement products, where carbon dioxide (CO2) is used in place of steam or mist as a performancing-enhancing curing agent. It offers lower manufacturing CO2 footprint and cement use, it diverts CO2 from the atmosphere, and it results in a high-performing concrete product.

As the company explains, “The CO2 used by the process acts as an expediting and enhancing curing agent, resulting in rapid concrete hardening and strength gain. The reaction is highly exothermic and substantially accelerates the hydration of cement. The CO2 gas in turn is permanently sequestered in concrete as calcium-carbonate crystals intimately interlocked in the cement paste matrix.”

The end result? A more sustainable alternative to existing curing practices. In fact, Brampton Brick’s Carboclave blocks are 25% more environmentally friendly than traditional concrete block products with the capacity to absorb up to 250g (0.5lbs) of CO2 in every 20cm block.

In this session, Brampton Brick’s Mike Kriesel shares details on the mechanisms governing concrete curing via carbonation, and demonstrates carbonation-curing’s associated environmental, manufacturing, and product-performance benefits.

This session helps viewers:

  • Understand the manufacturing process of concrete blocks
  • Understand the Carboclave process
  • Understand the purpose of sequestering carbon dioxide in concrete products
