TIME: 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Session Abstract:
The presentation will focus on three Toronto projects: Mirvish Village, 2444 Eglinton and 5207 Dundas St. West. The Henriquez Genesis Framework will be used to articulate the key influences and the role of the architect in the design process. Through this process, a hierarchy of issues are distilled, if successful, that translates into the parti, poetry and tectonic expression of a building.
The role of the architect is complex and requires the mastery of a myriad of influences to design meaningful architecture. At Henriquez, it is our view that every project is an opportunity to enrich local communities by integrating ethics and aesthetics. Informed by this credo and unwavering commitment to design integrity, we build whole communities that are inspired by people with the objective of achieving social, cultural, economic and environmental sustainability where all can belong.
Our buildings are unique solutions that are not guided by a preordained style. To help articulate our design process, we have developed a genesis framework to highlight the multitude of factors that influence design decisions. For any given project, there is always a unique hierarchy that materially influences the process and design, resulting in a unique aesthetic expression guided by the aspirations of our clients and the community at large.
Presenters:
Gregory Henriquez is the Managing Principal and a leader amongst a generation of architects who are reintegrating ethics and activism into the discipline. His work is founded on the belief that meaningful architecture must be a poetic expression of social justice.
Gregory has shaped Henriquez’s current practice, which is now best known for complex, inclusive and mixed-use projects. The Woodward’s Redevelopment completed in 2011 in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, remains unprecedented in Canada due to its scale, humanitarian aspirations and complexity. Since this time, the studio’s socially, culturally and environmentally sustainable projects continue to have a major impact on shaping local communities and include: TELUS Garden, Coal Harbour Community Centre and 60 West Cordova in Vancouver. Gregory is actively involved in the studio’s projects that currently include the 5 million ft2 Oakridge Redevelopment in Vancouver, Mirvish Village in Toronto and WB1200 in Seattle.
Gregory’s work has been honoured with numerous design awards including multiple Architizer A+ Awards, Architecture MasterPrize Awards, Azure AZ Awards and AIA Canada Design Awards, as well as the Governor General’s Medal in Architecture, BC Lieutenant Governor’s Medals in Architecture, Vancouver Urban Design Awards and a Canadian Institute of Planners’ Award.
Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Gregory holds a Bachelor of Architecture with Distinction from Carleton University. He studied at McGill University’s Master of Architecture Program in History and Theory, has taught at the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr University of Art + Design, is a lecturer for various universities and industry events, is a UNHCR Premier Advocate, and has published five books: Towards an Ethical Architecture, Body Heat, Citizen City, GHETTO: Sanctuary for Sale, and most recently, How can we live together?.
