This year’s title is “Strategies for
Mixed-Use Environments,” with the panel including architects from around the
world. The focus is on these projects, which have emerged as multi-faceted approaches
for considering global challenges, including housing shortages, environmental
sustainability, and economic resilience.
While developers are increasingly
capitalizing on the convergence of product types to achieve significant
returns, architects in Ontario and beyond face the challenge of designing
cohesive and innovative mixed-use environments. This year’s roundtable will include
a welcome from OAA President Ted Wilson and then delve into design
strategies and ideas that effectively integrate diverse programmatic elements
within mixed-use developments.
Moderated by architectural writer, critic,
and curator Adele Weder (author of the OAA’s recent SHIFT2025 Challenge
book), the session aims to highlight solutions from various contexts, providing
valuable insights into the future of architecture and its role in meeting the
dynamic needs of urban landscapes.
Panellists include:
- Roberto Bannura (Beijing partner, Steven Holl Architects);
- Amela Brudar (senior principal at GBL);
- Frans de Witte (partner and director of Americas studio, MVRDV);
- David Pontarini (founding partner, Hariri Pontarini Architects); and
- Michael Sørensen (global market director, Henning Larsen).
Doors open at 8 am, with refreshments served. The roundtable
itself begins at 8:30 am, concluding at 10 am. It helps kick off
The Buildings Show, which brings together architects and other
design/construction/real estate professionals from around the world to Toronto,
December 3 to 5. In addition, there are dozens of
architectural-focused Continuing Education sessions throughout the event,
exploring topics such as integrated project delivery (IPD), Ontario case
studies, accessibility, building materials for considering climate action, and
technology advancements. Check out the full program.
