Think Glocal: When to Use Local Wood, When to Look Abroad

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Description

Specifying wood for use in construction of tall buildings, industrial facilities, and residential housing makes more sense than ever before. We provide inspiring examples of today’s built environment with details showing how to extend its life, its use in healthy homes and hospitals, how mass timber has catapulted the proposition of local woods, and the anatomical reasons that some woods from other countries are better suited for outdoor applications.

Learning Objectives

  1. Supply chain from forest to lumber market to your project.
  2. Where and how to use more wood to improve your project.
  3. How wood use in buildings improves the health of inhabitants.
  4. Why some foreign woods are better suited to the outdoors.

Presenters:

Yuill McGregor, President, North on Sixty
Yuill McGregor is a Toronto-based builder (R-2000, 1988) and one of Canada's foremost authorities on wood. Yuill’s passion for wood began at age four, when he was given a set of Maple building blocks from his grandmother. He’s been building things ever since. Yuill’s expertise on the subject — from forestry through to building applications — is matched only by his passion for sharing that knowledge with his peers as well as the next generation of designers and builders. His company, North on Sixty, takes on ambitious building projects of all types — most employing the unmatched aesthetic and performance characteristics that only his favourite building material can offer
