Toronto Community Housing: 50 Torbolton Passive House Retrofit Project

This Case Study presentation will describe the benefits of ultra low carbon design via Passive House EnerPHit Deep Energy Retrofit Design & Certification. We will describe the project and its development through the TCH leadership, existing building design discovery process, stakeholder engagement regimen + approvals, design process and construction process.

Presenters:

Kevin Stelzer, BES, BArch, OAA, MRAIC, LEED AP BD+C, BSS, CPHD

Kevin is the founding principal of ENFORM Architects. Previous positions included principalships at Brook McIlroy Incorporated and B+H Architects. He has worked across Canada, the United States, the UAE and Asia. He studied architecture at the University of Waterloo and studied Building Science at the University of Toronto. He is a licensed architect, Certified Passive House Designer, Building Science Specialist, and a LEED accredited professional. He has served on the CAGBC Energy & Engineering Technical Advisory Group, the CAGBC Embodied Carbon Working Group, the UN Sustainable Buildings & Climate Initiative Task Force, volunteered for the World Green Building Council and currently serves on the Waterfront Toronto Design Review panel.

He has extensive experience in low carbon architecture, systems design and engineering coordination. He has participated in some of Canada’s most compelling high-performance projects including: The Mohawk College Net-Zero Energy Joyce Centre (McCallumSather & B+H Architects), The Humber College BLDG Nx Passive House Retrofit (B+H Architects), The UBC AMS Nest (DIALOG & B+H Architects), the First Canadian Place Recladding & Renewal (MdAS & B+H Architects) and TCH 50 Torbolton Passive House Retrofit (ENFORM Architects).

Kevin speaks widely on topics of sustainability and architecture and teaches building science at Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Toronto; in their zero-carbon renovated 1880s era house.


Adam Pelissero, Design Manager, Toronto Community Housing

Adam is the Design Manager for the east regions of Toronto Community Housing. He has twenty years of experience in the design and construction industries, working on complex, ultra-efficient buildings.  At TCHC, Adam is responsible for the planning, scoping, analysis, and review of hundreds of projects that impact all facets of the built environment. Adam procures the services of architects, engineers and contractors that perform the most intensive renovation work in an occupied residential setting in Canada.  This work requires sensitivity to the residents, community, and overall environment to upgrade the built environment. Before design, Adam worked in the federal and provincial governments across a variety of portfolios.  While there, he gained a unique understanding of navigating government departments to develop and implement policy.  He has a passion for public engagement and fostering collaboration to tackle complex projects.
