Wellbeing by Design: A Purpose-Driven Built Environment

TIME: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Description:

As a society, we face seemingly unsurmountable challenges: climate change, social equity, affordability, and local economic development. How we design our homes, our neighbourhoods, and our cities can make a significant difference on improving public health and wellbeing. Working with communities – as designers of the physical environment – we can lead actionable plans and make a difference to meaningfully improve the wellbeing of people, families, and the environment. By approaching the concept of wellbeing comprehensively, this session will outline how policies, initiatives, and designs related to the built environment can have a lasting, positive impact. The concept of Community Wellbeing presented identifies 5 domains: environmental, economic, social, cultural, and political. All are interrelated. Cities have the capacity to confront the big challenges of our time – and it is critical to understand the importance of community wellbeing, environmental imperatives, social equity, and how design works to solve these issues.

Learning Objectives:

1. To develop an understanding of how the design of the built environment can meaningfully improve the wellbeing of communities.
2. To gain an understanding of the areas where design professionals and city-builders can impact the wellbeing of communities.
3. To gain an understanding of the value, complexity, and the opportunities for environmental and social impact.
4. To gain an understanding of tools and methodologies for undertaking meaningful change with existing communities
