Join the LSA for a screening of the film Secret Mall Apartment.
Using a small, inexpensive Pentax camera, a group of Rhode Island artists secretly built and inhabited an apartment inside a Providence shopping mall—living there undetected for four years. What began as a playful prank evolved into an extraordinary artistic intervention that circulated for years as an urban legend. Director Jeremy Workman reunites all eight participants to recount their hidden life behind the mall’s walls. The resulting film is not only a striking exploration of creativity, subversion, and civil resistance, but also a sharp commentary on gentrification, class divides, and the outsized role of mega-malls in shaping urban life.
