Nbisiing Indigenous Cultural Competency Training

Join ULI Toronto for a Indigenous Cultural Competency learning session led by Bob Goulais, President & Senior Principal at Nbisiing Consulting Inc.

This course is an introduction to Truth and Reconciliation: Indigenous Cultural Competency that fulfills the intent of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) calls to action respecting the need for all Canadians to learn about Indigenous peoples in Canada. This includes celebrating the living culture of Indigenous nations, learning the history of Indigenous peoples, the legacy of Residential Schools, Truth and Reconciliation, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties, Indigenous rights, Indigenous law, and Indigenous-Crown relations.

This learning session is done completely in the Sharing Circle using traditional protocols. In that way, it is truly an immersive experience, that requires focus, active participation and setting aside colonial ways for the day.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about Indigenous traditional ceremony through opening ceremony, Sharing Circle protocols, and the land acknowledgement;
  • Gain awareness of Indigenous history across Canada, Ontario, and in the Toronto area;
  • Gain awareness of the history and contemporary impacts of the legacy of colonialism and Indian Residential Schools in Canada, 60s Scoop and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
  • Learn a Pathway to Transformation including the concepts of Decolonization, Indigenization and Reconciliation;
  • Learn about ways of working with Indigenous peoples;
  • An overview of cultural safety and allyship in support of Reconciliation.
