In observance of Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the SSAC will host a free virtual event in collaboration with the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre at Algoma University. This new federal statutory holiday honours the lost children and Survivors of Canada’s residential school system, their families, and communities. It falls on September 30, which since 2013 has been observed as an Indigenous-led day of commemoration known as Orange Shirt Day.
The event will feature a talk on the architecture of residential schools as well as a virtual tour of the former Shingwauk Residential School, now located on the campus of Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Shingwauk was designated a national historic site in April 2021. We hope you will join us on September 28 for an evening of reflection, education, and commemoration.
This event is free and open to all. Please register in advance.
