Plans for two of Waterloo Region’s tallest proposed towers have been approved by Kitchener councillors.

Woodhouse Investments Inc. and Vive Development want to build a mixed-use development with 51- and 57-storey towers at 50 Borden Ave. S.

The property, at the corner of Charles Street East and across from the Borden LRT station, currently contains a former industrial warehouse that’s more recently been used by indoor recreational businesses.

It would be demolished to make way for the towers, which would be connected by a 13-storey podium.

The buildings would include 1,224 units (795 one-bedroom and 429 two-bedroom units), about 7,650 square feet of ground-floor commercial space in six units and nearly 42,000 square feet of institutional space.

A staff report said institutional uses can include educational, religious, cultural, community or arts facilities, although no specific uses have been identified yet for this project.
