Several Measures of Particular Relevance to Architecture Profession
The Federal Government recently announced a forward-looking plan prioritizing economic and environmental health for all Canadians through clean growth and accelerated climate action initiatives.
A Healthy Environment & A Healthy Economy builds on the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change and includes a number of new measures and significant investments tied to five key pillars.
The first pillar, Making the places Canadians live and gather more affordable by cutting energy waste, includes measures that are particularly relevant to the profession. Notable items under this pillar include a commitment to invest in green and inclusive community buildings, with a specific allocation for projects serving First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. The plan also commits to develop a new model ‘retrofit’ code for existing buildings in collaboration with provinces and territories by 2025, and to conduct Canada’s first-ever national infrastructure assessment starting in 2021 to undertake long-term planning toward net-zero emissions.
The four other pillars are:
- Making clean, affordable transportation and power available in every Canadian community;
- Continuing to ensure pollution isn’t free and households get more money back;
- Building Canada’s clean industrial advantage; and
- Embracing the power of nature to support healthier families and more resilient communities.
