Halton Region approved $13.475-million in funding for construction of the proposed Indwell affordable housing building at Waterdown Road in Burlington.
Along with approximately $5.49-million from the City of Burlington, mostly in a long-term land lease of three city-owned properties at 1022, 1028 and 1030 Waterdown Rd., the local funding commitments will be leveraged by Indwell as it approaches the federal government’s Build Canada Homes program for 50 per cent — approximately $21-million — of the cost to build.
Next steps for Indwell
Indwell regional director Leah Logan said the charity is working with the City of Burlington on finalizing the lease agreement, site plan and building permit details.
It is also in the final stages of building design — which has led to a small increase in the number of proposed units.
Burlington has already endorsed Indwell’s vision, subject to final design, stated its intention to negotiate a lease with Indwell, and passed a zoning bylaw amendment to allow a mixed-use building between five and 11 stories on the site.
