Niagara Falls City Council has approved the Chippawa Willoughby Community Centre project, clearing the way for a new multi-use recreation facility designed for the growing community while preserving an existing neighbourhood landmark.

The $59-million construction project follows more than two years of planning, technical reviews and public consultation with residents, recreation users and community stakeholders. The approved design incorporates feedback gathered during the engagement process, including expanded recreation space and the adaptive reuse of the existing arena.

“This project is an investment in the future of Niagara Falls,” Mayor Jim Diodati said in a statement. “We already know this will become the place to be. It will be an exciting hub for ice-skating and hockey, host to a library and all things community. We can’t wait to see it take shape and welcome everyone there.”
