Collisions with the built environment account for millions of bird deaths each year. Exterior glazing is the biggest threat, as daytime collisions are associated with the reflection on the glass of vegetation or the sky.
The OAA has continued its support of bird-friendly design and the work of groups like Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP), and also made related standards accessible to members.
As part of the OAA Headquarters Renew & Refresh project, bird-friendly design has already been applied to specific areas of the building that had been noted as high strike zones. Now, further work has taken place on another section of the building. In August, a product endorsed by both FLAP and the American Bird Conservancy was applied to additional sections of the building. These small white markers are placed on the outside surface of a window to reduce the surface reflection and alert birds to avoid collision.
