Volunteer for an OAA Committee in 2027

Submit Your Expression of Interest by October 16

Volunteers are important to the work of the OAA, with a diversity of voices, opinions, skills, and knowledge critical to the decision-making process. Until October 16, 2026, the Association is welcoming applications for seven committees with vacancies beginning in January 2027:

As the Association’s governing board of directors, OAA Council will make appointments at its December 4 meeting, with Association staff reaching out to successful candidates early in the new year.

The Association recognizes the inherent benefit of equity, diversity, and inclusion; it encourages the active participation of members in its volunteer opportunities and aims for committees and task groups representative of the profession now and in the future.

Communications and Public Education Committee

The Communications and Public Education Committee (CPEC) provides oversight and advice on public education and outreach activities. More specifically, it focuses its efforts to advance the public’s understanding and recognition that architecture is integral to the quality of life and well-being of society as experienced through a sustainable, resilient, and durable built environment.
Among its wider responsibilities, CPEC offers specific advice and recommendations to Council in relation to the OAA Conference location and the Association’s awards programs, while also evaluating and approving applications submitted under the Society Project Funding outreach program for the Local Architectural Societies and the Public Awareness Funding program.
Architects and Licensed Technologists interested in joining the Committee in January 2027 should fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to communications@oaa.on.ca with “CPEC Application” in the subject header.

Complaints Committee

The Complaints Committee is a statutory committee, established under the Architects Act, that considers and investigates complaints made by the public or members of the Association regarding the conduct or competence of OAA members and practices. It carefully assesses information, evidence, and submissions from all parties involved through a fair and impartial process, determining whether a complaint warrants no further action, remedial measures, or referral to the Discipline Committee in accordance with the Architects Act and the OAA’s regulatory processes. Members are supported by staff and receive annual training to ensure they are prepared to carry out their investigative responsibilities.
OAA members interested in joining the Committee for a three-year term that begins in January 2027 must fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to complaints@oaa.on.ca with “Complaints Committee Application” in the subject header. Several years of experience in a broad range of architectural activities is ideal.

Discipline Committee

The Discipline Committee plays a vital role in upholding the integrity of the architectural profession and protecting the public interest. Committee members serve on three-person tribunals that hear and decide cases involving allegations of professional misconduct or incompetence. These formal, quasi-judicial proceedings require members to carefully consider evidence, apply the principles of procedural fairness, and make impartial decisions in accordance with the Architects Act. Tribunals are supported throughout the process by independent legal counsel, and committee members receive annual training to ensure they are well prepared to carry out their responsibilities. Serving on the committee is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to professional accountability and public confidence in architectural practice.
OAA members interested in joining the Committee for a three-year term in January 2027 must fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to discipline@oaa.on.ca with “Discipline Committee Application” in the subject header. To be eligible, you must have 10 or more years of experience in the practice of architecture.

Experience Requirements Committee

The ERC plays an important role in supporting the development of future OAA members and ensuring that candidates for licensure possess the breadth and depth of experience required for professional practice. Committee members participate in a structured assessment process to review experience-related matters, applying their expertise and judgment to determine whether candidates have demonstrated the competencies and experience requirements established under the OAA’s regulatory framework.
The committee’s assessments are grounded in the competencies established through the national Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) and the Canadian Standard of Competency for Architects, which outline the essential skills and knowledge required for independent practice in Ontario. Through a consistent process, the ERC considers individual circumstances, reviews supporting information, and makes informed decisions that support candidates’ progression toward licensure while upholding the standards of the profession. Committee members are supported by staff and receive annual training to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities. Serving is an opportunity to contribute to the development of the next generation of OAA members and support pathways to licensure.
The ERC is seeking OAA Architects to join in January 2027 for a three-year term. To be considered, fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to ERC@oaa.on.ca with “Experience Requirements Committee Application” in the subject header. Several years of practice experience in a broad range of architectural activities is ideal.

Policy Advisory Coordination Team

PACT coordinates the means in which to address specific issues and concerns that are political in nature (i.e. requiring discussion with various levels of governments). It identifies emerging issues in the design/construction industry specifically related to the practice of architecture in Ontario and coordinates the advancement of those issues to ensure the public and the profession have fair and transparent conditions in which to operate.
PACT coordinates OAA Committees’ work toward achieving maximum effectiveness through the monitoring of priorities and inter-communication. It identifies methods of gathering information about issues, advancing concerns and initiatives to governments and the membership.
The Committee meets six to eight times per year at the OAA Headquarters or virtually. Architects, Licensed Technologists, Intern Architects, or Intern Technologists who would like to be considered for a term beginning in January 2027, must fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to policy@oaa.on.ca with “PACT Application” in the subject header.

Practice Resource Committee

The PRC is a standing committee that reviews regulatory and business-related issues that impact day-to-day architectural practice. This includes material for OAA Contracts, Practice Tips, and other practice matters/documents with a view to “best practices.” It also fulfils the role and responsibility of the Practice Review Committee, which is required to oversee the administration of the OAA’s Practice Consultation Services program in accordance with Section 52 of Regulation 27 under the Architects Act
First-hand experience in a broad range of architectural practice activities provides the appropriate background for the committee’s work. Six meetings a year are held at OAA Headquarters or virtually, along with email correspondence and use of online collaborative tools for projects.
OAA licensed members who would like to be considered for a term on PRC, beginning in January 2027, must fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to practiceadvisor@oaa.on.ca with “Practice Resource Committee Application” in the subject header.

Registration Committee

The Registration Committee conducts hearings to ensure those entering the architectural profession meet the standards established to support competent and ethical practice. Committee members consider applications and registration matters that arise when the Registrar issues a Notice of Proposal to refuse an application for licence, limited licence, temporary licence, or certificate of practice (CoP). In these cases, a panel of the committee acts as an independent tribunal, carefully reviewing evidence, considering submissions from the applicant and the Registrar, and determining whether the requisite requirements under the Architects Act and regulations have been satisfied. Committee members are supported by independent legal counsel and receive annual training to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities. Serving on the Registration Committee provides an opportunity to contribute to the fair and consistent registration practices.

The Registration Committee is seeking OAA Architects to join in January 2027 for a three-year term. To be considered, fill out an Indication of Interest form and send it, along with a current CV, to registrationhearing@oaa.on.ca with “Registration Committee Application” in the subject header.;
