Admission Course Overview
The OAA Admission Course is a mandatory prerequisite for licensure in Ontario as an Architect or Licensed Technologist. It contributes to ensuring all applicants demonstrate the core competencies required to safely, ethically, and professionally practise architecture.
The online course focuses on Ontario-specific regulatory, legal, and professional practice knowledge necessary to protect and serve the public interest. Its curriculum reflects a competency-based approach and supports individuals in understanding their professional obligations under the province’s legislative and regulatory framework
The Admission Course ensures those seeking a licence or limited licence understand:
- the OAA’s regulatory role and mandate;
- their professional responsibility and ethics;
- the legislative framework governing architectural practice in Ontario;
- contractual, risk management, and practice management principles; and
- their obligations under the Architects Act and related regulations.
The Admission Course is administered by the OAA's Office of the Registrar, with the University of Toronto’s (U of T’s) School of Continuing Studies (SCS) supporting course delivery through its online learning platform and related services. Offered online to accommodate individuals from any location, it takes place three times a year. Review scheduling information early in licensure planning to support timely completion of all requirements.
The Admission Course comprises eight modules. Completion requires passing all eight modules in a single session. Individual module completion is not recognized.
- 01AC Professional Responsibility, Ethics, and Membership in a Self-Regulating Profession; ·
- 02AC Construction Act;
- 03AC Legal Aspects: Professional Liability and Architects’ Contracts;
- 04AC Planning and Development Approvals;
- 05AC The Building Code Act and the Building Permit Application Process;
- 06AC Ontario Building Code Compliance Data: Concepts and Code Analysis;
- 07AC Bid Theory and Bid Practice; and ·
- 08AC Contract Administration and General Review.
These eight modules must be fully completed (all at once) to earn a completion report, with 100 per cent completion of all quizzes required. (You may retake a quiz as often as you like until you get 100 per cent.)
Registration is $400 +HST and is limited to Intern Architects and Intern Technologists. Broadly Experienced Foreign Architects Program (BEFA) candidates may be eligible.
